Webinar Guide Series

webinar guide series logo

Throughout 2013, TextProject is sponsoring a series of webinars with thought leaders from across the United States addressing key aspects of the Common Core State Standards Initiative (2010). As of August 15, five webinars are available on the TextProject YouTube channel addressing the rationale for the CCSS, questions about what may be left unaddressed by the Standards, important changes in instructional approaches (or shifts) that will be required of teachers as they implement the standards, and so on. The full list of webinars, completed and planned, appear at the bottom of this page.

Teachers working with professional learning communities, teacher candidates working on their initial license, and graduate students in literacy education will find these webinars both informative and thought-provoking. For teacher leaders and teacher educators, the webinar series provide rich content that might spark useful discussion. The guides posted here, designed and written by veteran teacher educators Thomas DeVere Wolsey and Elfrieda H. Hiebert, are designed to serve as a starting point for exploring the content in the CCSS Webinar Series.

Each guide follows the same format for ease of use. An overview makes it easy to see exactly what is in the guide, and provides clickable links to the webinar presentations on YouTube. Links to the webinar slides are included in PDF form. A brief description of the background and a summary of the webinar follows. Key terms are defined in the next section. The balance of the guide consists of the mainstay of the guide in three sections.

In “Listen and Learn” users are provided purpose-setting questions to guide thinking as they view the webinar. “Reflect and Respond” poses three to five questions about the content of the webinar. Often, these questions focus on specific portions of the webinar. A clickable URL takes the user to the point in the webinar under consideration—in this way, viewers may derive the most benefit from the webinar without watching the entire webinar.

The guides end with an “Analyze and Apply” section with additional resources and ideas for putting the concepts from the webinar into practice. Of course, when references are needed, they are cited at the end of the guide. TextProject hopes you will find these guides useful for individual reflection and study, for stimulating robust discussions in face-to-face education courses or online venues, and for assisting all teachers to make the rapid changes that the CCSS demand.
